Gravitational Waves: An Introduction
نویسنده
چکیده
In this article, I present an elementary introduction to the theory of gravitational waves. This article is meant for students who have had an exposure to general relativity, but, results from general relativity used in the main discussion has been derived and discussed in the appendices. The weak gravitational field approximation is first considered and the linearized Einstein’s equations are obtained. We discuss the plane wave solutions to these equations and consider the transverse-traceless (TT) gauge. We then discuss the motion of test particles in the presence of a gravitational wave and their polarization. The method of Green’s functions is applied to obtain the solutions to the linearized field equations in presence of a nonrelativistic, isolated source. Mehta Research Institute, Chhatnag Road, Jhusi. A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves
Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

Gravitational waves are considered in thermal vacuum state. The amplitude and spectral energy density of gravitational waves are found enhanced in thermal vacuum state compared to its zero temperature counterpart. Therefore, the allowed amount of enhancement depends on the upper bound of WMAP-5 and WMAP-7 for the amplitude and spectral energy density of gravitational waves. The enhancement of ...

Brinkmann's plane-fronted gravitational waves with parallel rays — shortly pp-waves — are shown to provide, under suitable conditions, exact string vacua at all orders of the sigma-model perturbation expansion. 1. Introduction The condition for the vanishing of the conformal anomaly for a bosonic string in a curved space is expressed, in σ-model perturbation theory, as R µν +. .. = 0, where the...
متن کاملGravitational Waves and Black Holes An Introduction to General Relativity
In these lectures general relativity is outlined as the classical field theory of gravity, emphasizing physical phenomena rather than formalism. Dynamical solutions representing traveling waves as well as stationary fields like those of black holes are discussed. Their properties are investigated by studying the geodesic structure of the corresponding space-times, as representing the motion of ...
متن کاملGreen's functions for gravitational waves in FRW spacetimes.
A method for calculating the retarded Green's function for the gravitational wave equation in Friedmann-Roberson-Walker spacetimes, within the formalism of linearized Einstein gravity is developed. Hadamard's general solution to Cauchy's problem for second-order, linear partial differential equations is applied to the FRW gravitational wave equation. The retarded Green's function may be calcula...
